Well I think that it could snow in UK for Christmas because it has snowed at least 3-4 times last week so I believe that there is a pretty good chance of a white Christmas.

If you want in a figure, a percentage then I think it would be 78% of snowing on Christmas day.

It has a very good chance but all we can do is wait for it...x

There is an 18% chance of a white Christmas Day this year.

Chances are if you live in england then not a very high chance at all!

but say you live in the northern states of america or you live in canada!

then you will most likely get a white christmas there!

if you do want a white christmas then id go there over the christmas holidays!

Even when the question comes from the UK & Ireland team, the septics have to leap in. Those North of the main frontal belt get a white Christmas, those underneath it get a wet Christmas and those to the South get a dry Christmas. The problem is that the belt seems to get further and further North each year (something to do with global warming) so if you want a white Christmas you need to go to the Faeroe Islands.

Probably the same as every year but depending on which part of the country or world you live in it is always hit and miss - next year I think I will take myself off to Lapland, then I will be sure to have a White Christmas.

But let us all spare a thought for the thousands in the UK and millions around the world that have been so badly hit by Flooding, Landslides, Tornado's, etc - I pray that everyone will have a fairly good Christmas and let us hope that 2010 will be better all round for everyone!

Happy Christmas and a Healthy & Prosperous 2010 to everyone around the World xx

I doubt it the only two white Christmas's that i have heard of is the one year in the 70's i think and my dad got a new bike and really wanted to ride on it but he couldn't due to snow until his dad finally gave in and cleared the drive way and I remember the one back in 2004 when we had snow on christmas day it was the first christmas we were having in the house we live in now that year I got a digital camera for christmas and went out side and took pictures of the snow. I believe we tend to have a white christmas every 30 years approx and occasionally in the years between it tends to snow somewhere between jan, feb, march. Earlier this year we had about a week of snow and I got 2 or 3 days of school that was good.

Well...I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones we used to know, where the tree tops glisten and children listen to hear slay bells in the snow...come on everybody, it is nearly Christmas...I'm dreaming of a white Christmas with every Christmas card I write, may your days be merry and bright and may all your Christmas's be white! And don't forget, every time you hear a bell ring an angel gets it's wings! Oh well, why not just once a year relish the sentiments. I'm sorry but I actually love Christmas! (despite the financial struggle and listening to so many people moan that it's here again, too quickly, etc, etc) if you believe in the Christmas spirit then everything always turns out good, trust me, it does! Think about it, if you're lucky to live for 80 years then you only actually get 80 Christmas, I'm grateful for everyone I'm here for because you just never know if you'll be around for the next one! (I'm 43 but hey, who knows!)

Apparently there's snow due pretty soon. So fingers crossed.

Looking back the last 40 years in the UK between 1971 and 1992 there was only one year when it snowed on Christmas Day, whereas in the years 1993 to 2003 it happened five times so the chances are hard to judge, but we can all live in hope.

Depends what you mean.

In The UK, White Christmases are technically dictated by the met office, and certainly don't require the country to be covered in a blanket of snow.. Without doing more digging I seem to recall that a certain (small) volume of snow flakes need to hit some monitor on a roof in London to qualify. If I remember right, You could live in Sheffield, or Newcastle or Manchester, be under 2 foot of snow but because there's no snow in London the bookies wont pay out. On the other hand 10 minutes of snow in the middle of London and glorious sunshine the rest of the country may constitute a White Christmas.... Rubbish isn't it!

Nothing is beyond being categorised and labelled these days. If you are asking because you think you might have a tenner on it, I would say the 9:1 odds mentioned are good, if you are wanting to take the kids sledging on Christmas morning, I'd say plan a board game instead...

Well it's been snowing non stop where I am for the past couple of hours and doesn't look like it's going to let up soon. This adds to the several inches that we've accumulated over the past couple of days so I reckon I'm in for a white Christmas this year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.

In the UK Nil, where I live in Wales where it is supposed to snow in the winter in 15 years I've only ever seen snow twice and that was in March and November respectively. Oh, and for those who are politically correct, you can't say 'White Christmas' it may offend someone, poor little narrow minded fools who think that saying white is raciest, and as for all this crap about global warming, yeah right, Global warming, it doesn't exiest, it is just another lie we are being told to sting us for more tax, another lie by those who have all the wealth and intend to keep it no matter what. I mean I watched a program on television recently about living green in an alternative life style, what did those morons turn up in to collect those taking part in this so called experient, a bloody great big V8 Petrol Range Rover, not a good advert if you are trying to convert someone to go green, so back to the question, will we have a white Christmas? Not a chance, a White Christmas has never happened in the UK in 55 years, it is all romantic clap trap, mind you, we've been close to it a couple of times when it snowed on New Years Eve once in 1970, happy Christmas just the same.

Today Snowdon (highest peak in England and Wales) has a sprinkling of snow. The Met Office super computer says we are probably in for a mild winter - pretty much like they predicted last year and we all remember what happened in February. It also predicted thenon-existant "barbecue summer" too, don't forget. I don't know if we'll have a white Christmas but I'm willing to bet we'll get snow into the New Year. After all, how can you take a computer that doesn't recognise a cooling trend seriously?
2009-11-28 08:37:37 UTC
In Scotland where I live, there probably will be a white Christmas. It's been very cold down here lately, it's been raining a lot, there was a very strong wind a number of days ago and there was fog down here today. So I'd say that the chances of a white Christmas in Scotland are very high.

A white Christmas is when it actually snows on christmas day. I believe that this only happen twice in the 20th century. The odds are so against any white christmas in the next 40 yrs, maybe never again in the UK

20% chance of a white Christmas
2009-11-28 03:31:57 UTC
The chances of having a white Christmas here in the UK are slim, the last century 1900 - 2000 only had 13 so on that 100/13 as the bookies put it. This however is only counted if the snow falls on the

•London, Buckingham Palace

•Liverpool, Albert Dock

•Aberdeen, Aberdeen FC grounds

•Glasgow Cathedral

•Edinburgh Castle

•Exeter, Met Office

•Manchester, Granada Studios

•Birmingham, Bullring

•Cardiff, Millennium Stadium

•Belfast, Aldergrove Airport

•Leeds, Elland Road

in 2009

As the climate changes and possibly gets warmer this will reduce the odds in the coming years.

Well winter will arrive to the UK in the next few days as a cold front pushes up. The current weather patterns suggest that if we do have the drop in temperature we would likely get snow. The reason being is the moisture in the weather systems currently causing floods etc in the UK. There has already been very heavy hail storms in the South East (stones about the size of butter beans) and this suggests the current wind patterns could Well prove fruitful to allow the particles to form to make snow !

The air/ground temperature need to reach about 0c this will be the best conditions for snow to fall.

Another factor for snow this year will be the direction of the cold fronts. If we get a north sea front heading south we should see snow in the south east. Cold from the south will see the whole country suffer and from the west should only see the north get the snow. (as a general rule!).

On thing is for sure, if it does snow with the current moist air and winds we will be up to our eyeballs in it !

I'm in my mid 40s and recall 3 white Christmases in England which works out to about once in 15 years. However, the Ice Cap melt is causing the gulf stream to slow down thereby reducing the mildness of our climate. I therefore think the probability of a white Christmas this year is about 1 in 12.

Pretty good..As an amateur meteorologist of many years, I make detailed studies of the North Atlantic "Synoptic Chart" trends. Currently the trends are for the centres of (larger than usual) Icelandic low pressure regions to be fairly high in latitudes this Autumn. Their trend is also to be larger this year, with individual "Lows" sometimes almost covering the entire width of the high North Atlantic. The dominant "Azores High" is relatively low in latitude, with the top range of isobars generally sitting on a latitude equal to Southern Spain. If this trend continues, and the Siberian Continental high (anti-cyclone) continues to expand westward, the cold Siberian air rotating clock-wise in the Anti-Cyclone, and originating from Arctic regions, will meet the warm moist, cyclonic air (rotating anti-clockwise) of the Icelandic lows. At the point where the temperature gradient meets, and the zero degree Isotherm falls to around 1,000 ft ASL, which is usually along the central spine of England, then any precipitation (rainfall) will fall as snow. I predict, that if the Icelandic lows stay as large as they have been, throughout the past month of November, the snowfall will be both substantial, and prolonged, with eastern counties of the UK worst affected. On a positive note the high level of precipitation that the UK has experienced in November, will be falling as snow in the Central Massif and northern European Alps. This will of course be good news for the holiday skiing business. I hope this is helpful.

No chance of a white christmas. I think the TV weathermen have shares in the bookies. In the run up to christmas they "Always" predict a white christmas, then a few days before admit there is no chance. Mind you, they can't even forcast 1 hour ahead, not alone a month !!!!!

White Christmasses have always been rare in the UK. There was often snow around Christmas in the 17th-19th centuries because of the "little ice age" but, since then, very rarely. A lot of the most popular Xmas stories date back to those times, however, so we have an image of snow in December ingrained into our national consciousness. Also, on the east coast of the US snow is common at Xmas, and portrayed in a lot of the classic Xmas films.

I am always amazed at my clairvoyance. This question about snowfall this year fascinates me. Every time I read it, "December eighteenth" comes up as the answer.

I hardly know how to interpret this. I am wondering if it means yes, chances are pretty good you will have a white Christmas this year and near London, England, the date will be December eighteenth. I will be sort of following this one just to see if it happens to be accurate.

I don 't know if we're talking a mess of slush and a nuisance kind of snowfall or a major snowfall, or even a blizzard, which will enhance the beauty of everything for miles around, especially out in the countryside...

Snow on the top of the Black mountains in mid Wales today! Last snowed here in the Black mountain area Christmas 2004/5 so we might be due for another go this year. Well it depends on where you are. Countries near the North pole and the South pole have a higher percentage of getting a white Christmas this year. One big problem these days is Global Warming which results to increased temperature which makes the White christmas more likely to be an imagination for people who live whithin the belt.

It's very possible. It can snow around any time of year. My eldest sister was born on a snowy day, and that was in May! Plus, it has been very cold in the UK with a frost in the air, as well as mist. The question is clearly aimed at those of us who live in Britain & Ireland.

NOT AMERICANS !

Snow in December is & always was highly unlikely, it is much more likely in mid winter (Jan & Feb). The only reason that we expect snow is because of our romantic memories of Dickensian/Victorian Xmases, but this was a temporary abhoration due to an unseasonal cold snap in the late 19th century (possibly due to industrial pollution).

I would rather have my family & friends together & happy with plenty to eat & drink than a pretty scene outside the window.

Snow on top would be nice - not holding my breathe though !

For a good chance you need to go to Finland or anywhere above the arctic circle or above 600m in the mountains. It is snowing now or in the next few days in the Alps. Sadly for us in berlin we seemed to only get a rainy Christmas.

Faroe Islands is in the sea, so won't be snowy, only cold, along with most places along the coast unless very far north.

Obviously where my family are in South Africa it is summer, so they will get a sweaty Christmas:-D

It depends where you live. For us in the Scotland, UK they are quoting a figure of 30%.

In Australia where Christmas is only 4 days from the blazing summer solstice (lucky people) it will be very, very close to 0%. For the scientists living in Antarctica it will be 100%.

Wow! Popular question!

No way on south coast (UK), usually still working outside in t-shirts on the odd sunny day, but I'm betting we will have a very bitter spell in late january, early feb. All the old wives tales about heavy fruiting trees in autumns before bad winters seem to come true :). Im stocking up on firewood for then, it has been the norm for a few years now, and they seem to get colder. Last year diesel froze overnight, never happened here before!

Well its getting colder in the Uk, so i suppose its a possibility. But generally, it tends to be mild around the 25th December. I think it will snow a few days before and we will have a slush Christmas rather than a white one. Shame xxxx :-( LOL

Hmm.. it does really depend on where you live. If you live near scotland then chances are you will probs get some snow :) the snow tends too fall around jan - mar time coz of global warming and all that stuff. But hopefully everyone will see atleast some snow fall this year :)

Yes,despite the global warming:I don't believe in global warming,I mean, just look how cold it is in winter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The ice caps are just shrinking because of Earth's natural period, that's all. And,being as I live in S wales(not telling you the rest!!!!!!!!!!),it snows every winter here,so the chances probably$50/100 chances of it snowing on Christmas Day,but the chances of it on January,February, and March are extremely likely, and maybe a chance in April.

this year in Italy (I live in Italy and arrived in Yahoo! UK for event and I saw this question) of snow has fallen a lot and it continues to decline. White Christmas will be here 100% because there is a layer of snow almost 20 centimeters high here in Florence!

Centuries ago, in medieval times Christmas was celebrated in January in the UK. Snow is much more likely in the UK in January and so this is the reason why many christmas cards depict snowy christmas scenes.

Nowadays, in the UK, Christmas is celebrated in December and snow is far less likely.

I am in the West Country in the UK and I would guess almost nil.

We don't get much snow here in the UK, except for Scotland, I believe they get quite a lot.

I hope we don't get snow here around Christmas even though snow looks cool as long as you don't have to go outside. When it gets slushy it is downright dangerous.

Basically, I hate snow. Nice in pictures, not nice to live with.

Statistically speaking, no more or less likely than in any other year in the past few decades. Chaos theory was developed to predict weather: it failed. It can snow in June in the British Isles, and temperatures can be 15 degrees above average in January.

it will be a white X'mas. the snow, however, will melt away after that. becomes bitterly cold and snow will come back in january and will be heavy in february/march time frame in the mid-Western part of the US. european countries will experience the same thing. this is the result of the climatic change and preparatory to the December 12 2012 re-facing of the earth. sonow is the time to enjoy life and repent your sins.

I live in Norfolk and know a local elderly fisherman and he has been right with his weather predictions for years. He says that we are going to get snow before Christmas with lots of cold snaps throughout winter.
2009-11-28 15:36:07 UTC
As we feel the chill winds especially around December 5th. Weather forecasts will bring about uncertainty. Because a milder few days appear thereafter. An unpredicted flutter of snow around the 12 of December will guarantee treacherous weather continuing on the following days. It is advisable to stock up on provisions, it will get worst.

Here in Thailand, zero chance, but what is disturbing is that short bursts of very large hailstones fall more frequently than ever before and wreck people's rooves. More frosts appear in the North. This year the usual cold spell from China was colder than before.

in terms of weather at the moment, in the uk the chances are quite high. it's very cold fo this time of year, so at some point or another it will snow.

in terms of fairness, however, we got our snow fix in feb. a whole week of 2ft snow. it wouldn't be very fair to bury us again.

overall though, life isn't fair, so it'll probarbly snow.

Where I live it snows more in late Jan and Feb so about 1%.
2009-11-27 07:08:50 UTC
Even when the question comes from the UK & Ireland team, the septics have to leap in. Those North of the main frontal belt get a white Christmas, those underneath it get a wet Christmas and those to the South get a dry Christmas. The problem is that the belt seems to get further and further North each year (something to do with global warming) so if you want a white Christmas you need to go to the Faeroe Islands.
