Question:
How do I get my Christmas tree to drink water after it has dried out?

I was keeping my Christmas tree watered for a number of days but then forgot to add water the day before yesterday. I then added hot water but the bowl is staying full and it is not taking any water. It is fully decorated so cutting off the next inch is not an option. Is there something I could add to the water to get it to drink again?

Depends on how dry it is ( a few needles falling off or piles of needles on the floor?)

Since it's already decorated you might try boring some holes in the trunk, well below the water line, so that you don't have to handle the tree too much.

Unplug the tree, then using a turkey baster, remove the water.

If it already is, or gets very dry I'm afraid all you can do is get rid of it. Pain, I know.

It may now be a fire hazard although the little cool lights today are much safer today than the old larger ones.

Still, spontaneous combustion does happen!

If you should ever decide to get an artificial tree just hang a wreath in the room with the tree 1 or 2 days before Christmas (they will be really inexpensive then too!) and you will still get a little of that wonderful aroma.

I've heard of (and tried some) many suggestions, ) aspirin, sugar, etc.but unfortunately I have never known any of them to work.

Good luck!

Well cutting it off is the best answer, but it would sure be a pain at this point. I think if it were me I'd try drilling into it or cutting it in some way that you could do while the tree was still standing. The goal is to open up the 'vascular system' of the tree to let it take up water.

This has happened to me in the past and I wasn't willing to take it down either. The problem with a dry tree is the fire risk. A dry one goes up FAST! What I did to be a safe as I could be was to get the air in the house as humidified as possible (humidifier, open the door and not turn on the exhaust fan during showers, boil water, etc. Also I got a spray bottle and sprayed the tree liberally, not to the point of wet, but lightly and often.

Of course, you'll want to remember basic fire prevention-don't use extention cords under rugs or packages, don't plug too much into one outlet, no frayed strings of light, great care with candles, etc.

I used to work for a christmas wreath making and tree selling operation. Here is how to save your tree, but you'd better act fast.

Heat enough water to fill the tree stand to 100 degrees (not quite boiling) Dissolve 6 regular asprin tablets in the water with 2 teaspoons of sugar. While the water is cooling, get a sharp kitchen knife and carefully crawl under tree. Scrape the bark on the bottom of the trunk with the knife until you can see a little of the inner wood. Carefully crawl back out. Get the water. Crawl back under tree and put the water mixture in the tree stand.

Then, get an empty spray bottle (rinse out a hairspray bottle or

windex bottle several times.) fill it with COLD water . UNPLUG

ALL CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ON THE TREE. Spray the tree all over with cold water. Try to avoid ornaments (or remove any paper or fabric or satin ones ). The tree should drip some water onto the Christmas tree skirt and look like it was rained on lightly.

Repeat Everything every 12 hours for the next 36 hours.

The tree should come back if it isn't too dead already.

since you tree is most likely lighted and decorated you won't want to undo it.

So, what you need to do is make sure that you can get to about two or three inches from the bottom of the base and drill into the trunk about a half inch or so past the inside of the bark, one or two will do.

then you need a watertight container that will be able to retain water above the hole that you have drilled, a water level of about an inch above the hole will due.

next you will need an additive in the water like a Karo or corn syrup not much maybe a tablespoon or two for the sugars in the tree, but pines need to replace some of the oleo resin that has been lost, check with a garden store for that. figure 3 oz to a liter of water as a mixture.

some recommend adding seven up or ginger ale as well as a few aspirins

For best results.

1. Cut off the bottom of the tree, it may be scabbed over...you can lift up the tree & have someone cut it. You may need to trim some of the bottom branches.

2. Put warm water in the base & fill daily.

3. Put 3 crushed aspirin in the water (it will thin out that sap that causes scabbing of the part you cut).

The choice of doing a little redecorating v. just leaving it is yours.

Wish there was an easier way.

Hot water may have sealed the base of the tree so it can't drink. You may have no options available but cutting it. Here's something you can try though. Remove as much water as you can and then take a knife and put cuts in the tree at the base to reopen the veins. Only use cold water too keep the tree fresh and add an aspirin to the water. I don't know what it does but the components of aspirin help the life of the tree.

Sorry to say that once it has dried thats pretty much it. One little trick I use when I water....and just maybe (crossing fingers) with your situation.... take a regular white aspirin tablet and crush it into a fine powder then dissolve that into your water. I'm not sure if it will cause a dried tree to start taking water again but it works wonders at making a tree last longer.

Merry Christmas.

You can cut into the bark at the very bottom and see if that will work, if the water goes down it's working, remember next year get the tree a little later like the week before Christmas. Please be careful with your tree if it is badly dried out, so much of home fires going on with Christmas trees..I learned my lesson and got scared one year, said to myself never again a live tree, Get a fiber optic tree, they are beautiful and can be used year after year.

Try cutting a few gashes into the trunk just above the base but below the water line of your tree stand. This will allow the tree to absorb the water again. When it became dry, the base of your tree sealed, so the only thing that is going to help at this point is to allow the tree a source to access the water again.

Trees are cut in late October into November. Nursery grown trees are cut later, but all are several weeks off the trunk before they even appear in the tree lot. Then sitting around in a warmer climate doesn't help. Yes, next near buy earlier, cut several inches off the bottom and place into water and keep in garage or other dark, cool spot before bringing into house. Far better than hot, dry, sunny tree lots where they shrivel up. As for now......keep the humidity up in the room, keep the tree out of sunshine and don't keep the lights on very long, unless they are the tiny type which doesn't put out that much heat. When the needles start falling, it's time for the tree to come down.

Wow, so many answers! I would just trash the tree, get a new one and redecorate. Checkmark this one off as a story down the road you can tell your friends and family about to get a good laugh. I know it's a hastle to redo the tree but if it gets too dry and brittle, you are seriously looking at a fire hazard with the lights on it and better safe than sorry, don't you think? We all need some kind of goof-up Christmas memory, let this one be yours. Happy Holidays and good luck!

1: Drain out some of the water.

2: Drill 4 or 5 half inch sized wholes

about one quarter of the way into the

tree.

This will allow the tree to take in water.

Hope this helps

I've heard putting aspirin in the water will help the tree but I've never tested it. To be honest I don't think it'll do anything but if you've done everything else I'd say try the oddball stuff out there.

But keep trying the hot water, it may help a bit. You may also want to lower the temperature in the room the tree is in because by their natural making they're designed to live in cold areas such as Vermont, New Hampshire and Canada so colder temperature should get it back to some life, it's just that you can't put it outside since it's already decorated.

Another idea is to remove the lights on the tree especially if they're those big bulbs that heat up a lot (I think it's 3 watt bulbs but I'm no electrician). This idea goes back to the temperature thing, you may actually want to do this and cool down the room a bit as well for best results. The lights should also be off when you're not home or asleep at night (those are just common sense things)

You're going to have to suck it up, take the ornaments off and cut an inch off the bottom of the tree. Either that or drill holes in the trunk. Once it dries out, there are no miracle cures other than the above.

Try drilling a small hole inch above the truck where water can pass through it. Unplug the lights and mist the tree with water. The water will not harm the lights or cause damage they are insulated enough to prevent this.

Cut an inch off the bottom. The cut end of a Christmas tree will sap over, sealing the tree and preventing it from "drinking". Cutting it off will open it back up so it can "drink".
missanglgrl
2006-12-14 14:13:15 UTC
Since you can't cut the inch off. Try taking a knife and sticking it in below the water line and punching some holes into the truck. Do not go all crazy with the hole punching, but about four or five above the base, but below the water line.

Get somebody to hold the Tree. Drive nails into it near the base. The holes will provide a means for water to get in so the Tree can "drink". Simple, huh?lol

How dried out are we talking about here? If the tree is dead the needles are falling out and turning yellow your out of luck if not here's what you do. Take the tree out of the stand cut off about three to five inches from the bottom with a saw. cut the bottom of the stump aways in the center then put the tree back in water.
2006-12-14 19:04:01 UTC
Well in most cases, you can't. Once it is dried out, it is dried out. The best thing to do is to try to water it in the tree stand and just let a few days go by. And if it doesn't work, then the tree is dead most likely.

since it is decorated and taking it from the stand is not an easy option ,,, this is what i did one year when in the same situation i took a scoop and removed as much of the water as possible then i took a drill and made four fairly deep holes in all four sides and refilled with water it worked beautifully,,, hope you have good luck with it as a dry tree is a dangerous tree ,,, MERRY CHRISTMAS and A N EVEN MORE WONDERFUL NEW YEAR,

I really dont believe that your tree will come back to life ,and that really sucks before christmas, although i can offer you some advise for next year. If you mix a little bit of jello with the water when you first get the tree , the tree will suck up the mixture and cause it to stay more hydrated for a longer period of time( for those of us who forget to water daily) just make sure that you dont make the mixture to thick or the tree wont suck it up. as for your current problem try spray painting it green again, and getting through the holidays, sorry i couldn't help more.

2006-12-13 07:56:31 UTC
You could try sugar. You could try stuff that florists put in floral bouquet packets. You could crawl under there with a really sharp paring knife or an electric drill (don't sue me, I'm not too sure about this one, you'd better soak the water out with a towel first) and slice scratches or slice the bark off or drill holes through the bark on the sides of the trunk so it could drink out of its sides .

Some people mist their trees, but I personally think that must wreck their decorations.

I hope you get some better answers. Good luck.

Use a portable drill and drill a few holes in the trunk at the water line and the tree should start to drink again
Gene
2006-12-14 12:56:31 UTC
You can't. Once the tree is dry, it will not take up any more water. The water is carried up the tree through capillary action and requires a continuous flow of water.
2006-12-14 12:53:32 UTC
if you can drill holes into the base or higher up.. and put into a deeper vessel of water and see if it will take water then.. you got to find some living material... then it may soak up the water... but there may be a good case where it will get damp and not drink the water.

if this doesn't work.. recut.

if that don't work...

Try drilling some holes close to the bottom. Then you can buy a shrub spray at a nursery. I forgot exactly what it does, seal in the water or something to that effect. I used it a few years ago and just remember it did wonders.

But you may want to go to a nursery and ask about it.

Everyone telling you to cut the bottom are right!

When a tree dries out the tree seals the bottom, cut the inch off and keep it watered, if you don't have one all ready buy a tree stand with a big reservoir.

Depending on the size, a tree can go through a gallon of water a day.

In my exprience all that really helps is to recut the bottom of the tree. You would just need to take about a half inch off the bottom. You could also try remove some of the outer bark at the bottom as that would do the same thing by exposing fresh wood that can absord water.

We have had that happen before. What you have to do is create some holes in the trunk so the water can get in. My husband used an ice pick and poked numerous little holes around the bottom. Once the tree has dried out, then it develops a barrier around the bottom so that is why the tree won't drink. You have to provide another way for the water to get in.

remove some of the outter bark that sits in the water. While your tree lights are OFF and UNPLUGGED during the day, provided your ornaments can handle it, mist the tree with water in a spray bottle.

Mythbusters on Discovery channel had done the asprin thing...it doesn't work. They didn't try the misting (which I swear by) and they also didn't use the diluted pure maple syrup either (which I swear by as well)

Give it a straw. Make sure it's a bendy straw because they're more fun and junk.

You can put an asprin (regular, chalky kind) in the water...this usually works.

2006-12-13 08:39:00 UTC
You can empty out the water somehow and try to drill some holes as low to the bottom as you can.
?
2015-09-19 09:50:59 UTC
then you need a watertight container that will be able to retain water above the hole that you have drilled, a water level of about an inch above the hole will due.

try shaving bark below, at or above water line; then raising water level to allow capillary absorbtion from new wound...GL

I have drilled holes into the base.. this way it has new wood to absorb the water.

2006-12-13 17:09:16 UTC
Try SuperThrive (get it at your nursery) You can also poke some holes in the bark about a half inch up, to get it too take water.

Try poking some holes in the side of the trunk with a knife or other sharp object.

This is why using a living tree is better. Then you can plant it after you're done; and if you forget to water it for a couple of days, it's fine because the dirt around it holds water and with roots the tree is more durable.

Recut the tree, because when the stump dries out, it won't take in water like it should. Then give it water mixed with sugar or syrup.
