So my husband and I got into a discussion with some friends. The topic was clothing as a christmas gift for an adult. Now, my husband and I agree that clothing is always a good gift....for children or others who may not be able to purchase new clothes. However, we don't agree that clothing should be given as a gift to adults. For example, I wouldn't buy my mother-in-law jeans as a gift. If anything, I would give her a gift card and accompany her to the mall IF she wants. We figure that buying an adult clothes, especially someone you've only known for a few years, is a bad idea because it raises too many questions like:
~What if it doesn't fit?
~What if they don't like the style?
~What if it just makes them uncomfortable?
All I'm saying is that a gift card is a better alternative. What do ya'll think?

I think clothing is generally a bad idea for most people but not all. If you've gone shopping with the person, know their style or something that they've been eying, then that's more than fine but if you have no idea what they like it's a great idea to opt just for the gift card. I'm very picky when it comes to clothes and more often than not I'd rather be given the gift card/money to buy a shirt than for them to pick it out.

EDIT: An exception would be like if you're buying it for your mom/dad/kids, etc. Then you may know what they want/like. For example, I bought my dad pajamas this Christmas because I feel you can't go wrong in that department and I got my mom a workout jacket that she had said she wanted.

In my opinion clothes are ok

IF

you have a basic idea of their style & know their size.

Unless I knew very specific brand, style & size I wouldn't buy pants or jeans for anyone. Especially a woman, pants are hard to fit ....

but a nice top, sweater, fleece pullover they are ok if it's something you really thing the person will wear. I try to buy things similar to what they already have.

When I give gift cards I like to give them with something else so i can find a creative way to wrap them

I think that clothing is a wonderful gift if you are confident that you know the person well enough to get something they like. As for size, you should probably know it before you buy them clothes, but always keep the gift receipt just in case.

Some items of clothing are okay, others should be avoided.

Winter gear like gloves, scarves and hats are ok.

Sweatshirts, holiday sweaters are okay. Since most are made big and people buy them big anyway.

I would avoid undergarments(of course),dress clothing and anything that would be tricky to size appropriately without talking to them first. If I'm looking to contribute to their regular wardrobe I'd opt for a gift card to the store I know they shop at.

A gift given in love is a perfect gift.

(But keep the receipt.)

it depends how old you are, and they'll like it, if they care about you and if not take it back and let them exchange it for something more they prefer if worst comes to worst
