I'm Canadian, not American, but whatever, close enough.

My immediate family and extended family (Cousins, grandparents, etc) get together on Christmas eve and eat a nice big supper, then just hang out and talk. No fireworks, or anything like that. The youngsters sometimes play video games or watch TV. We also open the gifts at around midnight and stay up until around 1-2 in the morning.

Fireworks aren't part of it. On Christmas eve, a lot of people look at Christmas light displays around their town. Generally, they share a nice dinner with family. This might include hot mulled apple cider, hot buttered rum, or spiked egg nog. Some people go caroling. Some have late night church services. The kids leave out cookies and milk for Santa. They also hang stockings on the mantle. Some kids open one present before bed, some open all their presents before bed, but most open them first thing Christmas morning. After opening their gifts, they have breakfast. Some visit extended family like grandparents and open more presents. They might have a big Christmas dinner around noon or eat at a restaurant. Some people volunteer at nursing homes or hospitals to visit people without family and give out small gifts. A lot of people like to go to the movies on Christmas day. Some people enjoy Chinese dinner because a lot of other restaurants are closed. That's about it.
