Christmas was declared to be a celebration of Christ's birth (not his actual birthday) by Pope Julius I in 350AD. It was originally called The Feast of The Nativity. Many of the secular traditions have crept in from other cultures over the centuries. http://www.history.com/topics/christmas
"Xmas" is NOT "taking the Christ out of Christmas". X and XP are the first two letters of the word Christ in the Greek alphabet, and the words "Christ" and "Christian" have been abbreviated using X and XP since at least 1021AD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas#Usage_of_.22X.22_for_.22Christ.22
Christmas was declared a federal holiday by President Ulysses S Grant in 1870. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_and_how_did_Christmas_become_an_official_government_holiday
There have been a number of court cases arguing that the separation of Church and State forbids the federal recognition of Christmas and other religious-based holidays. In most cases. the court has decided it did not violate the constitution, provided that enough other religions were represented so as to fulfill the Constitutional phrase "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion". http://atheism.about.com/library/decisions/indexes/bldec_HolidayIndex.htm

christmas as a festival is not the time of the birth of christ christians just use it as a time to celebrate the birth of the savior which is important
the songs and everythign have stemmed from different things that people have done to celebrate
santa claus started with st nicholas dropping a purse of money down someone's chimney it landed in a sock that had been placed by the fire to dry. - thats where stockings and santa originated from
later santa turned red from coca cola and he is always a bloke in a red jacket now
the christmas tree will have many origins. pagan, egyptian, prince albert
movies i guess people just like ot big up this time of year
while maybe from a christians perspective people have lost sight of the true meaning for christmas this is the time of year that people will try to make up and come together and share the love and i think that would be important to god as well

Christmas was originally based off the Winter Solstice and the celebrations of the Romans (or was it greeks) around that time.
It became associated with Christians because early Christians, while trying to gain popularity, would adapt and become flexible so that a wider audience would accept them.

Okay, so the true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, December 25th is not the exact date he was born, nobody knows the exact date, but we know it's close to it.
But now there are are a lot of people who are not Christian who don't celebrate Christmas for Christ, but for presents and food. It is called season without reason, when people celebrate Christmas without celebrating it for Jesus. That is also why it is called CHRISTmas, some people say Xmas and that is not right, that is taking Christ right out of Christmas! Many people have different opinions on what Christmas is about, but Jesus is the reareasonon that we even have a Christmas. Those songs like Jingle bells were just made by people whcelebratete the season without reason!
Hope I helped!
Merry Christmas

It is mostly a pagan festival of winter solstice worship of the goddess Saturnalia that christians justify by changing the name to Christmas. Notice mistletoe and other evergreens are pagan emblems.
