Question:
Can someone tell me about buying Christmas trees in America?

I live in Australia and everyone I know has a plastic tree. Actually, even if we want to cut a tree on our own property we need council approval to do so, and most of the time they say no. Well, anyway, I always see American Christmas movies and I was just interested in things like where you buy the tree, how much it is, how you get it home, when you buy it and when you throw it out, where all these trees come from and where they go after Christmas and how it stands inside your house ... well, everything really! Thanks...

There are businesses that keep special tree farms for christmas trees, and when Christmas gets close, they cut them down, rent some land to sell them there, and poeple buy them. Usually, you buy the tree and tie it down to the roof of your car or put it in your truck to take it home. The prices go from $30 to $200, depending of the size and quality of your tree. People usually buy a tree right after thanksgiving, as it would be weird to have a tree up when your celebrating thanksgiving. There are special bowls made for trees to stand up in, and its usually put in your living room. I'm not sure about other people, but we usually keep our tree halfway through January. After Christmas, people toss their trees into a dumpster, and sometimes, there are services where you can set out your used tree out on the curb in front of your house, and someone will go around and pick it up. Sometimes there is a named nearby where you can drop off your tree. If anything, you can chop it up into peices and stuff it into your green waste container.

A lot of people buy plastic trees too, though.

There are several options. 1. Today they make beautiful affordable artificial trees that come with the lights already in them. They are very realistic and can be used for several years. They come in a box, put the segments together and plug in the lights.

2. If you want the experience of a real tree, there are Chritmas tree lots, where the trees are precut. (they are grown on tree farms specifically for this purpose, so we are not depleting a forest somewhere.) You select the one you want (be sure to measure your ceiling height before you go,) the lot workman will bundle the tree in netting (be sure to ask him to cut the trunk) and help you attach it to the top of your car, or load it if you have an SUV or truck. Tell him you need a stand that will hold the size tree you selected. If they don't have stands there, you can get one at any store (like Wal-Mart or supermarket.) When you get it home, place the stand where you want the tree, before you cut the netting, fit the trunk into the stand and secure the screws into the trunk and center it. Remove the netting and fluff out the branches. Fill the basin of the stand with water and be sure to add water everyday. Christmas trees get very dry without water, the needles will fall out and it's a fire hazzard.

3. Go to a Christmas tree farm. Depending on where you live, there are farms where you go hunt around for a live tree, when you find the one you want, they give you a saw, you cut it down and an attendant will take it to the payment area where you can have them spray it with flocking or glitter if you want, or keep it plain. They will bundle it in netting and help you tie it to your car etc..

4. You can hire a Christmas decorating company. You pick out the decorations, tree etc... they come to your house set everything up and after the holidays, take everything away and store it for you until next year. It's expensive, but if it's in you budget and you entertain a lot they do beautiful work.

Prices vary widely. You can get a good looking artificial tree from $100.00 to $300.00 at a Wal-Mart type store, or you can spend up to $3000.00 at a boutique store. Real trees start at about $100.00 then go up depending on the size and kind.

Artificial trees are stored away in the box after the holidays, real trees are either picked up by the trash service in your neighborhood, or they have deposit points where you can bring them. They are usually recycled into mulch, or tossed into lakes for natural nesting areas for fish.

For safety, my rule of thumb is if you do not have a fire place, or you have one that uses gas logs, a real tree is ok. If you use a real wood burning fire place go with an artificial. In any case, keep it far away from the fire place. And unplug the lights when you go to bed. Hope this info gets you on your way to a great first Christmas tree.

We go to a tree farm to buy the tree. It is about 20 dollars. The tree place will wrap the tree so it is easy to transport and how you transport it depends on size of the tree and size of the vehicle. We usually get our tree the first week of December and throw it out the before the first of January. They stand in a tree stand that has a bucket to water the tree and make it last longer.

The tree farm specially grows a variety of trees just for people to come and pay down.I am not exactly sure were the tree goes when we are done with it. I know we put it in a big page and put it on the curb and garbage men come pick it up.

You buy the tree in lots that crop up around Christmas time; people buying them from Christmas tree farms to sell at markup. They cost anywhere from $35 to over $100 depending on genus and height. You get it home on your car roof or sticking out of the trunk. You buy it anytime after Thanksgiving. You throw it outo anytime after Christmas Day, or when it's begun drying and shedding needles. It's possible many places to have them shredded for mulch, afterward. It stands inside your house with a footed bowl-like container that holds water, to which you add sugar or nutrients.

Nowadays you can buy trees at many places. Plastic ones are also available in stores, but real ones are usually sold on street corners often by churches or other non-profit organizations. Trees range in price depending on how large of a tree you like. Since typical household ceilings in the states are 7ft, many people opt for a 5 or 6ft tree. These usually on the east coast where I grew up, range from 30-70 US dollars depending on the type of tree you are buying i.e. pine, blue sprce etc. Trees a lot of time are grown for this purpose and are brought down from northern states, but most come from Canada. People put them up aroound thanksgiving many times because the family is all gathered and its usually not taken down til around new years. It stands inside your house in a metal or plastic stand made for that purpose. In recent years there is a new trend. Trees that are potted can be rented or bought and that way the tree isn't killed for the purpose of christmas, because after christmas it can be returned or planted in your yard. Hope this was helpful.

There're usually set up on street corners scattered all around and in front of fruit stands where I live. They usually start selling them right after thanksgiving (4th thursday in november) which I think is stupid, it'll be bare before christmas. Most people strap them to the rooves of there cars, I put the top down and throw it in the back seat. I like to get mine no sooner than 2 weeks before christmas for usually around $40 for a 7 footer, can be more or less depending on size, then it goes out on the trash the day after new years.
