The US is our ex country so they mostly eat it when we do, on the day; in S. America they are really into impatience and go more for Eve but neither has Boxing Day at all.

There is no "norm". Every family makes their own traditions. Sometimes we have more than one "main dinner" due to certain family situations, perhaps the dinner is rotated between family members, and perhaps one wants to host the meal on Christmas eve, and the next person wants to host their dinner in the afternoon on Christmas day. It just depends on the family situation and whose turn it is to host the meal.

I know the movies always portray the family decorating the tree and then going to Christmas eve services, then coming back to the house for dinner and then presents being opened under the tree early on Christmas morning. That may be exactly what some families do. However, I am sure there are as many variations as there are families.

Growing up, we always decorated the tree about a week in advance of Christmas. We went to Christmas eve services and then went home, just our immediate family, and had a little snack. We had the big meal around noon or one o'clock on Christmas day, and then opened presents.
